this morning, reckoning with the role she’d been tasked to play in the upcoming spring production was proving to be a protracted process. as the sole asian female in her class, OF COURSE she was cast as the one japanese character instead of the lead. she had no choice. the character was written for an asian actress & there was no f’n way was she going to let them put somebody like blond-ass BECKY in that role. on the other hand, if her grandmother discovered that her sonnyeo was playing the part of an occupier, she’d be shunned or at least have some explaining to do. being in the play while not offending grandma was going to draw on all of her acting skills.
