this morning, it was going to take a bit of convincing for her to decide to abide & make an unexpected appearance at her younger sister’s baby shower later that afternoon. on the one hand, attending would go a long way toward mending the fractured relationship that had recently developed between them. on the other, her overly-critical mom would be there & navigating those waters was never easy. “your dress is too revealing.” “when are you going to find a man to settle down with?” “there’s no need for that second piece of cake.” she would have to take it all with poise & patience. well into her forties, she was finally going to be an aunt. that fact in itself made it worth the effort.
