this morning, if this had been a different situation, the jam packed public radio tote bags she carried everywhere would’ve symbolized something other than transience. last summer, this nice white woman gave them to her as a replacement for the raggedy ikea bags that, at that time, were straining to contain her entire life inside. these bags were so much better. they’d made it through all fall & winter with basically no wear & tear. kept her property intact. in fact, if it hadn’t been for those tote bags, she likely might’ve lost most of what she’s managed to hold on to for all her years on these streets. her physical possessions, that is. no quantity of quality public radio tote bags could keep her day-to-day emotions intact.
