this morning, before he stepped out of the house, he raised his scarf up over his nose. soft. elegant. masks most of his face. while it’s a charming piece of clothing indeed, the main reason that he began covering up like he does is because he feels safer that way. security. if you asked him to name the date when he began doing so, he’d say when it was but he’d also tell you why. it was all due to this disgusting guy who accosted him by the bus station. stopped him on his way to work. “can i ask a question, pal?” didn’t wait for permission: “what’s the deal with your face?” the man coughed out a cackle of a laugh. spittle spray in the wind. from that day forth, his scarf became a stylish shield from disease & humiliation.
