this morning #152.
this morning, it smelled like something was burning out in the yard. it was hard to tell if she was just imagining things though. where there’s smoke there’s fire & there wasn’t any smoke in the immediate area, so she got up to investigate. as she made her way to the back of the condo, the smell got intense. it was like being inside a campfire. the temperature change hit her hard at the kitchen’s edge. smoke rose from the forest behind her property. flames poked through the trees & for a solid three minutes, she just stood there watching them flicker & jump. it took a large elm exploding to snap her back to life, giving her just five minutes to flee. they’d be her last five minutes in that home.
