this morning #536.

this morning, she took several slow steps toward the sea, removing a small cedar box from her backpack as she reached the water’s edge. the surf felt warmer than she’d remembered from her long-past trips to this coast. her mom had always been infatuated with this beach & had tried to instill that same fascination in her daughter. while it’d led to her appreciation for nature, she ultimately drew greater inspiration from tree-strewn settings. the vast expanse of the ocean seemed to suggest that you could get washed away at any moment. when she finally got up the nerve to open the box & dump its contents out, it would do just that to the remains of her mother.
