this morning, they were in the prime of their life, priming their partner for this afternoon’s big reveal. a few days ago, the act of concealing the surprise had almost become too much but they had made it to today, letting their anticipation trickle out in drips of little here & there hints. the fact that they were able to afford such a lavish surprise, both financially & emotionally, never even crossed their mind. it probably should have. there was once a time when any unexpected moment came from a lack of resources, both financially & emotionally. now they got to be in control & when the moment came this evening, over cocktails & oysters, their proposal wasn’t really at question.
