this morning, up on a ladder he went. up onto the roof. a belt full of tools just in case. he’d been meaning to go up & assess the situation for months now but sometimes it’s just easier to be lazy. save the trouble for some other day. from what he could tell from down on the ground, it didn’t seem like there were any leaks anyhow. when he got to the top, he stepped off & walked across to the far side over by the chimney. no noticeable damage to the shingles. thought for sure that last month’s storm would’ve left some sort of mark. he breathed a sigh of relief but quickly sucked it back in. at first, he thought it was just the way that the light hit the chimney bricks but when he took a closer look, he made out what it really was—a thick smear of blood with feathers caked in.
