this morning, he’d wanted to show me his favorite place to go swimming for a while now so he picked me up in his truck right around dawn. headed toward the forest that borders our city to the north. as we traveled down the mostly-empty road, we didn’t say much to each other at first. just sipped our coffees. waited for the early morning brain fog to lift. in time: “i think you’re really going to love this place, dude.” “cool cool.” after ten seconds of silence, i continued. “i’ve really been looking forward to it.” i really don’t know why i decided to use the word “really.” it wasn’t like i was that excited about today’s outing. sure. it’s fun to get out in nature every once so often but there are lots of spots to swim. definitely skeptical that this spot will be anything that i haven’t seen before.
