this morning, the first words out of his mouth were far too loud. all of us in the waiting room at the doctor’s office started watching. slightly on edge with unsure smiles. waiting to see what he’d do next. i shared a nervous smirk with a few of my fellow travelers. the woman he was with sat at his side stone-faced. completely unphased when the next words he uttered were just as thunderous. couldn’t tell you what he was saying. maybe it’s korean? after a few more outbursts, he went quiet. i went back to staring at my phone. when i looked up, i felt his eyes from across the room. gave a wave & his face lit up. he instantly addressed me with what i assumed was a question. the woman with him translated: “he REALLY likes your hat.”
