this morning, this woman at work who will remain unnamed for obvious reasons made this comment about how “all southerners are disgusting.” i considered asking her to repeat herself but i knew what she’d said. had to ask her instead to enlighten me as to why. why the hate for southern states? with a head shake & an exasperated “WELL,” she began. she was born in georgia. lived there until age ten when her family fled up here to maine. still has lots of family down there. backwards family. racist. cruel. estranged. she took her familial brush of “disgusting” & used it to paint a one-tone picture in which every southerner acts the same. i didn’t have the energy to point out that her opinion was in much the same vein.
