this morning, everyone was so proud of just how far he’d come. after almost dying in a twisted car accident weeks after graduation, life had been a sad series of fits & starts & doctors’ charts. relying on others for basic life functions grew old quickly but he always tried to put on a brave face. his face just happened to have a strong scar across it. the deeper scar stretched through his nerves, keeping him on edge at all times. this morning, he didn’t feel so proud. he was awash in people’s pity & it felt heavy to have them help him shower & dress & eat a healthy breakfast. today they were taking him to get some fresh air at the beach. in all the tragedy, they’d forgotten that he hated the beach.
