this morning, we issued our official ruling. arson. i’d thought that was the case almost instantly & now i was certain. the fire had started outside. no accident. we’d brought in the cops. had the homeowners torched their own home or was it something bigger than that? my new detective pal was leaning toward the latter. at first, he insisted that he wasn’t at liberty to say why he felt that way but once we’d downed a few drinks & bonded a bit, he relented. a responding officer found a curious item by the edge of the property, an object out of place, a trace likely left by the arsonist. he wouldn’t say what it was just yet but i trusted that for him, for now, it was evidence enough.
